Export of Horticultural Products in Sudan

Sudan is endowed with diversification of climates, soil types and abundance of irrigation water; all these factors attract many investors on the agricultural sectors and especially the field of horticultural crops.
Recently there is remarkable flourishing in the vegetables and fruits trade in the European and Arabic countries markets and this increase in demand is due to the improve in economic situation in these countries.
In Khartoum state, the export of vegetables and fruits commenced in Faki Hashim area North of Khartoum these are Green beans, Tomato, sweet pepper,eggplants,okra as vegetables and mango, dry and fresh lemon as fruits.The expansion of galiamelon and green beans is underway.
Khartoum state has comparative advantages as centre for production and export of horticultural products and this is due to the availability of export and production infrastructure, such as:

 

 Suitable agricultural lands, Permanent irrigations facilities, Transport facilities, International air port, and a market, which can absorb the surplus from the export after the sorting& grading processes.
The EU countries importation of vegetables and fruits reaches 10 million tons and values 8000 million Euros.
The exported fruits from Sudan:
Mango:
Produced in the period from April to August and characterized by variation in types such as fibrous and fibreless types.
The EU imported 114 thousand tons of mango which valued 119 million Euro during the previous years.
The contribution of Sudanese mango in the European market reached 16300 ton with a price $ 600-700 $/ton.
The exported vegetables from Sudan:
Sudan is characterized by production of vegetables in the winter season ,this period is suitable to meet the highest demand in European market during December and February.

The winter vegetable crops for export:
Galia melon :
§ Produced during December and February.
§ Average production 8 tons/fed(60% of it for export and 40% for local consumption).
§ Preferred for the Arabic markets especially during Ramadan fasting month.
§ In the EU for Christmas and New Year festivals and occasions.
§ Average price FOB $500-5500 $/ton.

Green Beans:
The demand in West European markets reaches 75 thousand tons values 125 million Euros.
The main markets are :France ,U.K and Holland .(the production from Dec-March).
The average production is 6 tons/fed,80% for export and 20% for local consumption.
With high revenue.
The F.O.B price is 600$/ton.


Onions :
The European imports reach 271 million tons with value of 721 thousand Euros.
The production is 10tons/fed, 60% for export and 40% for local markets.
The common European markets are Holland ,U.K ,Germany and Belgium .
The Arabic markets are KSA,Gulf area, besides Ethiopia, and Eritrea .
The F.O.B Port Sudan price is $300-350$/ton.

Sweet Pepper:
The European imports 59 thousand tons valued 60 million Euro.
The major importing countries are: Germany, Austria, France and Holland.
The average production 6tons/fed, 80% for export, 20% for local markets.

Aubergins(egg plants)
The European demand is 2.7 thousand tons. With cost of 3 million $.
The major importing countries are: Germany and Austria.
The average yield is 10 tons per fed,80% for export and 20% for local markets.
